Lofty Intentions

Exceptional homes rise above the mundane, forging new directions in living. And exceptional is the fitting term in describing this loft-like home 15 minutes from downtown Santa Fe. Designed as the studio and gallery space for artist Otto Rigan whose remarkable large format required room to work, and later reconsider into a one bedroom residence, its architecture speaks volumes.

The dwelling consists of a series of rectangular shapes, united by glass and steel, with tall ceilings and walls of windows, creating a sophisticated and one-of-a-kind environment to live, work or both. The design allows you to see from one end of the house to the other while creating well defined space.

Right angles govern the architecture. Light streams in from the large multi-pane windows that are balanced by generous walls ideal for displaying art. The windows in series evoke Bauhaus buildings and stand in harmony with the traditional stucco surfaces of New Mexico architecture.

Approaching the residence, moving through the entry gate, the motor court and silhouette of the house and the ordered row of lush trees come into view. From the dwelling's elegant entry, living spaces flow in two directions. The flexibility of these spaces is significant.

Presently, to one side are the grand sitting room, sleeping quarters and 2 baths. Following the other direction leads to the sumptuous dining room, living room with fireplace and Sangre de Cristo Mountain vistas that opens out to a lovely view-filled enclosed garden replete

Kitchen and pantry are nearby, as is an outdoor area that works well for meals alfresco. And completing it all is a large metal storage container unit, ideal for stowing bicycles, camping gear and collectables.
